Join us for a day of mythical creativity as we celebrate the curious creature once at the heart of the museum’s identity – the wyvern!

With roots in English folklore, the two-legged wyvern has long been associated with Ditchling and the museum. Our founder, Hilary Bourne, even flew a handmade wyvern banner outside the gates when the museum was open, and the creature once appeared on decorative roof tiles made from local clay.

Inspired by this rich history, we’ll be making our own modern-day wyverns using a range of fun and accessible techniques. Get stuck into clay dragons and tiles, print with Tetra Paks and Gelli plates, and build your own wyvern sculpture from cardboard. You’ll also have the opportunity to sketch from a historic wyvern sculpture in our collection – once stored in three pieces in the museum archives and recently restored by Keymer’s Carver of Clay, Ian Martinson.

We’re thrilled to be joined by Ian himself on the day. A master craftsman and Keymer’s Brand Ambassador, Ian will be leading a clay workshop showing how to sculpt your very own wyvern to take home. With over 35 years’ experience creating handmade clay roof tiles and bespoke sculptures – from Beefeaters at the Tower of London to dragons in London and Manchester’s Chinatowns – Ian brings a wealth of skill and creativity to the day.
