The Art of the Goldsmith: Dunstan Pruden and His Legacy

Sun 29 January 2023
2:00 pm
- 3:30 pm

Free afternoon talk, entry included in museum admission ticket

The Talk

Join us for an entertaining, illustrated talk by Anton Pruden, Grandson of Dunstan Pruden and Director of Ditchling jewellers Pruden & Smith.

The talk will explore the place goldsmiths have taken in history before focusing on Dunstan Pruden’s life and work, his students and the family’s contribution to modern goldsmithing, continuing with the work coming out of Ditchling today.

The goldsmith & silversmith Dunstan Pruden joined the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic on Ditchling Common in 1932. His work, such as the famous Pruden Chalice in the Metropolitan Cathedral, Liverpool, influenced a whole generation of craftworkers. He also taught some of the most famous twentieth century silversmiths, such as Gerald Benney, at Brighton College of Art.

About the Speaker

Anton Pruden is a third generation gold and silversmith and he had his first experience of making at a very early age with his engineer father in his grandfather’s workshop.

Tickets are included in your entry fee for Shōji Hamada: A Japanese Potter in Ditchling.
