This one-day silk flower making course has been inspired by, and designed to complement, the current exhibition Dame Vera Lynn: An Extraordinary Life. Using traditional flower making techniques and tools you will be introduced to the skills needed to stiffen and shape silk to make realistic looking petals, buds and blooms; and to learn the secrets of combining different elements to make a corsage or trimming for millinery or fashion.
Sarah Lomax has been making bespoke millinery and trimmings for over 30 years since serving an apprenticeship with the late Frederick Fox. Learning her trade making hats for The Queen, other members of the royal family and celebrity clients; the couture methods and meticulous attention to detail have inspired and informed her working practice ever since.
With a passion for passing on traditional couture skills and inspiring new practitioners of the craft Sarah Lomax is the co-author of Millinery: The Art of Hat Making; and millinery tutor at Morley College London.
Sarah Lomax is a founder member of The British Hat Guild.
After enjoying independent careers in millinery Sarah Lomax and Rachel Skinner came together in 2013 to create the bespoke millinery brand Lomax and Skinner.
With deep knowledge and understanding of their craft the pair design and create contemporary millinery rich in form and shape, with the profound respect for the traditions of their trade woven through every piece.
Sarah and Rachel work from their studio in Lewes, East Sussex making bespoke hats and headpieces for special occasions, fashion and theatre.
