Ancient Treasures: Pewter Casting

with Dalia Mcmillan

The Workshop

In this one-day workshop, participants will design and create moulds using natural materials and ancient techniques with clay, sand and cuttlefish bone, and then use molten pewter to create a unique, wearable piece.

Participants will enjoy a walk around the exhibition, Signs of the Seaside and look at examples of silversmithing from the museum’s permanent collection for inspiration before creating their own designs and discovering the organic texture of local cuttlefish, one of Dalia’s favourite coastal materials to cast with.

After a local, vegetarian lunch, the metal casts will be finished using files and emery papers, creating a wearable piece to take away and enjoy for years to come.

Materials and lunch included.

Dalia Mcmillan lives and works in Ditchling, often showcasing her handmade jewellery in Artist Open Houses. Much of her work is organic and uniquely delicate. She believes in finding a fluid and improvised way of working with metal.

She trained in Fine Arts at London’s Wimbledon School, working in all media and then discovered the joy of working with metal and creating pieces to be worn.

A qualified teacher, she is Head of Art at The Drive Prep Secondary School alongside her work running a successful jewellery business. Her pieces can be found at Julian Steven’s in Brighton.

Signs of the Seaside runs from 29 April – 3 September 2023
