The Talk

Join renowned author John Vernon Lord for this special evening talk celebrating his friend of 60 years, Raymond Briggs.

Briggs was a pioneer of the graphic novel who dared to show what the world is really like with an underlying social message, rather than projecting a cute and sentimental world. In an original and unexpected way, his ‘children’s’ books tell subtle and profound truths. They are real human documents and often tinctured with humour. His stories and illustrations have entertained people of all age groups all over the world.

Tickets include a glass of wine upon arrival.

The Speaker

John Vernon Lord (b. 1939) is an author, illustrator, and educator. Born in Glossop in Derbyshire. His best-known works include children’s book The Giant Jam Sandwich (1972) and his award-winning edition of The Nonsense Verse of Edward Lear (1984).  His Aesop’s Fables won the overall Victorian and Albert Museum Prize for illustration in 1990 and in 2018 for his illustrations in James Joyce’s Ulysses. He is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Brighton, having been Professor of Illustration there for many years.
