Join us to learn linocut with Nick Morley

The Workshop

Inspired by Raymond Briggs’ illustrations for The Mother Goose Treasury, you will learn how to carve and print a linocut based on your favourite nursery rhyme.

Under the expert guidance of Nick Morley, you will learn linocut – how to safely carve a range of different marks, how to plan your design and how to successfully ink and print your block. This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some previous experience.

The Mother Goose Treasury was first published in 1966 and was one of Raymond Briggs’ earliest books. It includes almost 900 illustrations for traditional nursery rhymes, each one reflecting Briggs’ unique imagination and sense of playfulness. It includes many rhymes still popular today as well as some less well known and unusual ones. Raymond Briggs’ illustrations are as weird and wonderful as the rhymes themselves and many feature the working-class British characters and buildings that reflect Briggs’ upbringing and would become familiar to readers of his later books like Father Christmas and Ethel and Ernest.

The Workshop Leader

Nick Morley (Linocutboy) has been making linocuts for twenty years. He has illustrated books and magazines, and his prints are collected internationally. Nick teaches regular linocut workshops at Hello Print Studio in Margate and has run workshops across the UK as well as in Ireland and Italy. Nick has written two books: Linocut for Artists and Designers (Crowood, 2016) and Linocut: Learn in a Weekend (Skittledog, 2023). Nick is a lifelong fan of Raymond Briggs, and his favourite book is still the first one he was given, Father Christmas.
