Japanese Calligraphy for Families

Our ‘Try Something New’ workshops are half-day sessions designed for beginners, offering you the perfect chance to give a new craft skill a go.

The Workshop

In this Japanese Calligraphy for Families workshop, you will learn about ink and tools and explore different styles of calligraphy including block and floating styles. Takako will teach you about the different types of brush strokes and movements to produce characters, first producing basic letters, then words of your choice and your own name.

You will produce some words of your choice on calligraphy paper signed with your initials in Japanese characters, and beautiful bookmarks on decorative paper.

The Workshop Leader

Takako Higgs is a professional calligrapher and the owner of Takako Calligraphy and Arts. She has been learning calligraphy since she was 6 years old with Shugai Nishiyama, one of the top calligraphers in Japan. She is qualified to 5 Dan grade as a calligrapher and has won many prizes in calligraphy competitions including the Judge’s Special prize from the National Calligraphy Association of Japan. Her work has been displayed in the National Museum of Japan and she has produced calligraphy for TV set design.  Recently she took part in the Guinness World Record for the longest piece of calligraphy and produced a 104-metre piece!

Takako will also be creating a giant calligraphy piece at our Cherry Blossom season event on Thursday 24th March 2023.
