Introduction to Sussex Terracotta Tile Making with Adele Scantlebury *SOLD OUT*

Sat 22 January 2022
10:00 am
- 1:00 pm

Tickets include materials and refreshments.

This workshop is for adults.

Adele will bring two mobile tile-making benches so you can have a go at ‘throwing’ locally dug clay into moulds to make traditional Sussex tiles. She will also provide some pre-made tiles, oxides and clay slips so that you can explore decoration – whether a simple image on a single tile or a pattern that links across more than one tile.

This could be messy, so please bring an apron! Tiles made and decorated in this session can be taken away for drying and firing. They can be collected after 4 to 6 weeks either from the Museum or possibly from Adele’s workshop near Lewes.

Adele’s official art education ended in 1987 with a BA Hons in Ceramics from Farnham.  She was then fortunate enough to find work in Sussex making traditional finials and floor tiles – including the tiles for the Crypt of St Paul’s Cathedral.

It was during this time that she explored working with woodblock printing and really enjoyed the simplicity of the process; instead of a press, using the back of a wooden spoon and a lot of elbow grease!

A few years ago, Adele returned to clay after becoming involved in making the tiles for a friend’s new-build house from the clay dug from the foundations. Since she has had small, bespoke tiling commissions and run tile making workshops.

Please note: all adults and children over 11 years old unless exempt, are required to wear face masks throughout the building, including during workshops. This is to protect our staff and other visitors, particularly those who are clinically vulnerable.
