Introduction to Japanese Dance Form Butoh

with Yumino Seki

Sat 28 January 2023
10:30 am
- 1:30 pm

Our ‘Try Something New’ workshops are half-day sessions designed for beginners, offering you the perfect chance to give a new skill a go.

The Workshop

Butoh (舞踏) is a form of Japanese avant-garde dance, which emerged from the post-war chaos in Japan in the late 50s when the country grappled with the clash between new Western technology and traditional Japanese values. Nicknamed the dance of darkness, butoh was influenced by German Expressionism and self-identity, radically explored through bodily expression.

Shifting attention from ‘action’ to ‘active listening’ this workshop will explore the body’s transformation by using Butoh perspectives of ma (in between), wabi (simplicity/humbleness), sabi (process of decay) and the shadowy self.

Using imagery, music and body awareness, participants are encouraged to explore unique individual expression in guided improvisations in groups, partners and individuals in both dynamic and quiet movement.  Be playful, curious and attentive.

Yumino will be performing at our Cherry Blossom Season event on Thursday 23 March 2023.
