Justin Burns is Head of School of Arts at the University of Derby. His research, through his PhD at the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication at the University of Reading, explores lettering and typography at the English seaside: a study of resort identity, development, and experience.
His practice-based research investigates how lettering, typography and the discipline of graphic design contribute to the development and experience of English seaside resorts. He explores how inscribed, painted, and fabricated letterforms form part of the expected ‘image’ of the seaside and are integral to the visual packaging of our trip to the seaside.
