The Workshop

Join artist and basketmaker Tim Johnson in a one-day workshop exploring the ‘free warp tapestry’ techniques that Tadek Beutlich innovated after his move to Spain in the 1970s.

Working with coloured yarns, beaten esparto grass and sisal fibres you will create colourful organic artworks inspired by natural forms and Beutlich’s works shown in the exhibition.

If they wish, participants may bring along some wools, threads, yarns and fibres of their own choice to accompany those provided.

Tim will also be running a 4-day course on free warp tapestry at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft between 13 – 16 May 2025.

About the Workshop Leader

Tim Johnson is an English artist and basketmaker based in Spain, his work combines a fascination with the natural world, a deep respect for our global woven heritage and a desire to experiment and innovate upon traditional techniques.

Frequently harvesting his own materials from the environs of Catalonia and the Pyrenees, Tim enjoys exploring the possibilities of new materials and unusual combinations. Tim has been familiar with Beutlich’s work for many years and began researching his later fibre works in depth during the 2020 lockdowns.
