Cathie Pilkington at Brighton Festival: The Life Rooms
5 May 2017 – 29 July 2017
Showing for the first time since its acclaimed London debut at the Royal Academy, ‘Anatomy of a Doll’ is an exciting opportunity to view Cathie Pilkington RA’s provocative sculptural work.
The sculptures – a sideways response to Edgar Degas’ famous figures – will be displayed in Brighton’s own version of the Academy’s Life Room, playing with ideas of form and representation: are we viewing high art in all its sophisticated glory, or the mechanics of a hand crafted work in progress? Showing alongside the dolls is another rarely-seen display; in ‘Harmonium’, a humble wooden shelving unit becomes the framework for fascinating individual tableaux. Figurines, textiles, lightboxes and domestic items each tell their own story, questioning the viewer’s expectations of ornament, storage and display.
Using materials aside from traditional sculptural components (including textiles, plastic and domestic items alongside clay, plaster and bronze), Pilkington gives vent to a fascination with combining the visible mechanics of hand crafted work in progress and its everyday use with the loftier, more sophisticated and ‘complete’ elements of high art.
